Great video about home foundation moisture and insulation

If you’re a property owner, you probably dread the thought of having water damage or mold damage. Most water and mold damage can be avoided by simply knowing what to do and doing it. Here’s a list of the major reasons that allow water damage to occur.

Basement
– Test your sump pump by pouring water into it to see if the pump works and pumps the water out.
– Look for cracks in the walls and floors
– Clean out the window wells and put plastic covers on the window wells                                                                             

Landscaping

-Make sure that the soil is pitched away from your home to diver the water away
-If your landscaping is made from timbers or railroad ties, make sure the water can drain out of them.

Roof
-Put down spout extenders on your down spouts to divert the water away from the house.
-Look for damaged or missing shingles that would allow water to come in.
-Clean out the gutters so the water can flow to the down spouts, instead of overflowing next to the
house.
-Look for signs of ice damming
